James Gunn explains why one famous comic character didn't make his debut in the MCU's Guardians of the Galaxy movies. James Gunn's Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy and Special Presentation introduced some of the most extravagant characters in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, from Rocket Raccoon and Groot to Rocket's new Guardians of the Galaxy team, which includes the telepathic dog Cosmo and Adam Warlock's alien pet Blurp. The Guardians of the Galaxy movies and Special Presentation, The Suicide Squad, Peacemaker, and other non-superhero movies like Slither and Super are proof of James Gunn's bombastic directorial style.

On Threads, Marvel fan _jossvillalobos asks James Gunn why he "didn't include Nova in the Guardians of the Galaxy movies", to which James Gunn responds, "I only wanted one human being." The only human member of the MCU's Guardians of the Galaxy is Chris Pratt's Peter Quill a.k.a. Star-Lord, whose human origin is a key element in the Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy.

James Gunn's decision to make Star-Lord the only human character in the Guardians of the Galaxy movies is evident in the changes the director made to other members of the team. In the source material, Drax the Destroyer is a human being called Arthur Douglas, who dies in the Mojave desert and resurrects in the body of an alien humanoid. Likewise, Mantis was originally an orphan in Vietnam, but her origin story was retconned to make her an alien character. For their MCU adaptation, James Gunn made Drax and Mantis extraterrestrial characters to ensure that Star-Lord's human origins stood out.

Star-Lord's human origins are essential to the Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy. Peter Quill became the leader of an interplanetary superhero team despite not having any superpowers or special abilities (that he initially knew of), and he consciously left Earth in the past in order to explore the stars, inspired by his mother's dying words. Star-Lord is inherently a fish out of water, but he turns that characteristic into an advantage.

Nova Is More Likely To Appear In The MCU Now That The Guardians Of The Galaxy Trilogy Has Ended
Although all members of the Guardians of the Galaxy are still alive (excluding the original Gamora variant), the original Guardians team likely won't return. James Gunn also moved on from the MCU, as he's now the head of DC Studios. With a new Guardians team active somewhere out there in the galaxy and Star-Lord back on Earth, the MCU could easily introduce Nova now. In fact, the MCU's Nova show is in development, but its release date is unknown. Since the Multiverse Saga is so crowded, Nova might arrive in Phase 7.
